{"id":11198,"date":"2001-01-01T07:54:22","date_gmt":"2000-12-31T23:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/?p=11198"},"modified":"2014-06-03T10:19:14","modified_gmt":"2014-06-03T02:19:14","slug":"travelling-with-nevada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/?p=11198","title":{"rendered":"OP-ED:  Travelling with Nevada . . ."},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_5618\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5618\" class=\"wp-image-5618\" src=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/LeMc4232-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"Burma\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/LeMc4232-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/LeMc4232-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5618\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Burma<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I am often asked about our travel arrangements as well as asked for recommendations about who to use. \u00a0More often than not, we travel independently and armed with nothing more than a copy of The Lonely Planet and some research from the internet. \u00a0But from time to time, we find it more advantageous to use an expert guide &#8212; especially when we want to visit a remote or &#8216;logistically challenging&#8217; area.<\/p>\n<p>By far and away, the best expert guide we&#8217;ve used (and have travelled with three times thus far) is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nevadawier.com\" target=\"_blank\">Nevada Wier<\/a>. \u00a0First and foremost, Nevada is a professional photographer and she runs 3-4\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nevadawier.com\/tourfrst.html\" target=\"_blank\">private photography tours<\/a>\u00a0a year. \u00a0So as avid photographers, we love to travel and photograph remote places and people with Nevada. \u00a0In addition, we love travelling with Nevada because her trips are truly unique. \u00a0Whilst many\u00a0tour companies advertise about their ability to &#8220;get under the skin&#8221; of a place, Nevada actually delivers. \u00a0She has a fantastic network of local agents &amp;\u00a0contacts and as such she\u00a0leverages these connections to give her group the best possible travel experience. \u00a0For example, one of the major highlights of the 2012 trip to Guizhou China was being invited to the funeral of a local teacher in a remote village. \u00a0Whilst it may sound bizarre and morbid, the funeral was actually a village celebration of the man&#8217;s life and we were treated as honoured guests. \u00a0In Burma, Nevada arranged special travel permits for us to not only visit but to spend\u00a02 nights with the Chin hill tribe. \u00a0This entailed sleeping on the floor in a hut and spending three days with the tribe. \u00a0It was a truly authentic and &#8216;off the beaten&#8217; track experience. \u00a0Hard &#8212; yes! \u00a0But, fantastic nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>The hardest part about a Nevada Wier trip is getting your RSVP in before it completely fills up. \u00a0Nevada keeps the group size small and it is not uncommon for her trip to fill up within hours of the first email notice. \u00a0Nevada does not advertise her trips to the general public (in truth, there is no need as her trips are already in high demand); instead, she has a list of past clients and people that she knows. \u00a0(I like to call this the &#8216;non-looney list&#8217; because it means that the people she invites on her trips are people that she knows and has vetted &#8212; i.e. the alumni of past tours and her workshops.) \u00a0That said, she does run a &#8216;special list&#8217; for people who have contacted her\u00a0personally with their interests in her tours; if her tours are not immediately filled, then she emails those on the &#8216;special list&#8217;.)<\/p>\n<p>Although her trips are relatively more expensive than\u00a0other &#8216;travel photography tours&#8217;, in my opinion, they are worth it. \u00a0I particularly like the fact that she has &#8216;fully baked in&#8217; the costs of tipping and miscellaneous (expected) costs into the tour costs. \u00a0Thus, her group is completely and totally liberated from having to deal with tipping issues.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>+ \u00a0 + \u00a0 + \u00a0 +<\/p>\n<p>Please note that this is an independent review. \u00a0 We do not benefit from this review and we are not affiliated with Nevada Wier in any way.<\/p>\n<p>We first travelled with Nevada in 2009 when she headed\u00a0the National Geographic Expedition to India.
