Very memorable meal!<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>England &#8211; London:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sadly, our longstanding\u00a0favourite\u00a0brunch place (Tom&#8217;s in Notting Hill) has closed down. \u00a0As a result, our new brunch hangout\u00a0is\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">The Wolseley\u00a0<\/span>in Piccadilly. \u00a0Although the coffee and pastries are exceptional, the real gem at this establishment is the kedgeree which really has NO EQUAL . . . . \u00a0[ but one word of caution: \u00a0the kedgeree can be inconsistent; sometimes it is &#8216;simply sensational&#8217; and occasionally it is &#8216;above average&#8217;. ]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11277\" src=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_3636-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3636\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_3636-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_3636-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/IMG_3636.jpg 504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Ffiona&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a0(51 Kensingston Church St.) &#8211; when I want delicious restaurant-quality food but in a quiet, cozy and friendly environment, this is the place I go. \u00a0It is home to fantastic comfort food served with warmth. \u00a0I am particularly very partial to Ffiona&#8217;s chicken kiev as this is just simply delicious.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">The Royal China of Bayswater<\/span>\u00a0&#8212; believe it or not, the dim sum here is BETTER than the dim sum in Hong Kong. \u00a0Seriously. \u00a0The queues here are scary so try to score the first-sittings otherwise you may face a long wait (especially during the Sunday lunch-brunch scrum).<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Yauatcha<\/span>, Soho London &#8212; super posh and fusion dim sums that are delicious. \u00a0Highly recommend the venison puffs.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Bentley&#8217;s<\/span> in Piccadilly for oysters and in particular, for their oyster croque monsieur.<\/li>\n<li>For great Indian food: \u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Cinnamon Kitchen<\/span> for posh Indian, <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Dishoom<\/span>\u00a0(by Carnaby or the one near Kings Cross) for seriously yummy and moderately priced Indian, and finally\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Khan&#8217;s<\/span> on Westbourne Grove for delicious affordable Indian.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Manti by Mike and Ollie<\/span>\u00a0(sadly, this is now CLOSED!!!) and <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Tatami Ramen<\/span>\u00a0(for wonderful chicken gyozas) located under the arches in Flat Iron Square off Union Street in Southwark (near Borough Market).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/texas-joes.com\">Texas Joe<\/a>\u00a0 by London Bridge does an AMAZING smoked Texan Tonkotsu ramen!!! Imagine that! \u00a0This in my FAVORITE place for ramen in London and is leagues ahead of any competitors.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">City Caphe<\/span> on Ironmonger Lane and <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Moi An<\/span> on Fetter Lane for Vietnamese food (note: weekday lunch hours only)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pique-nique.co.uk\">Pique Nique<\/a> has consistency issue but it has improved in my standing after multiple visits. \u00a0Famous for their tasting menu based on a Bresse chicken (I would agree!), I would also add that they do amazing French style mushroom omelettes for breakfast. \u00a0(Note: it does depend on the chef &#8212; sometimes, the omelette is almost spiritually light and amazing. \u00a0Unfortunately, it was also (just once) an uneventful simple and ordinary omelette.)<\/li>\n<li>For a modern spin on Mexican food, there are 2 places to try: \u00a0<strong>El Pastor<\/strong> in Borough Market and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santoremedio.co.uk\">Santo Remedio<\/a> on Tooley Street. \u00a0 If, I had to select one of the two, then Santo Remedio gets my vote as their soft shelled crab taco is just the best. \u00a0(That said, El Pastor&#8217;s sea bass tacos are only 1 small notch below the crab tacos.)<\/li>\n<li>For fine dining:\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Club Social<\/span> at Tower 42 &#8212; great views and flawless food.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Le Gavroche<\/span> in Mayfair<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Dinner<\/span> (Heston Blumenthal) at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>For more details, please see the 2017\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/?p=12909\">London mini-blog<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>England &#8211; Yorkshire:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">The New Inn at Tickton<\/span>\u00a0(near Beverley, East Yorkshire) &#8211; this is a lovely country pub that serves honest and fresh produce. \u00a0I particularly like the fact that this pub sources it beef and pork from the local butcher at the Springdale Farm Shop. \u00a0[ DISCLOSURE: \u00a0I actually know the butcher personally and as such, I may be favourably biased. \u00a0That said, I know that she (the butcher) knows exactly where the meat comes from; the butcher&#8217;s husband is the farmer! \u00a0As such, if you care about the providence of your food, then you can trust the providence of the meat from the Springdale Farm Shop. ] \u00a0The food at the New Inn is well cooked; the atmosphere is light and modern; the food is reasonably priced and the service is friendly &#8212; what more do you need from a country pub?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>France:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where to Eat:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Le Lunch<\/span>\u00a0(Calanque, Sormiou, near Marseille) &#8211; although this establishment has very mixed reviews on TripAdvisor, we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Le Lunch. \u00a0Perhaps it was because we were there at the end of the season and the area was absolutely quiet. \u00a0Or, perhaps it was just a stunning sunny and glorious day to eat out on the deck. \u00a0Nonetheless, the food seriously impressed us with its simplicity, freshness and taste. \u00a0We would very happily eat at Le Lunch\u00a0again and again and again.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Le Relais des Cinq Ch\u00e2teaux<\/span>\u00a0(Vezac, Dordogne) &#8211; ah . . . \u00a0this restaurant is responsible for our addiction\u00a0to Gaperone cheese! \u00a0We had the most amazing tasting menu at this classic restaurant and when we thought it could not be a better experience, we were served Gaperone. \u00a0Ah . . . \u00a0heavenly cheese to follow a heavenly meal.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Ch\u00e2teaux de Fere\u00a0<\/span>(Fere-en-Tardenois) &#8211; the food was faultless and so was the service. \u00a0In particular, what makes this a special place for me was the fact that we enjoyed the meal so much that at the last minute we decided to eat there again after a long day driving around and exploring the nearby caves. \u00a0Although we were not properly attired, the staff made us feel completely welcomed and comfortable. \u00a0Highly recommend their degustation menu.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">a cafe near the Abbaye Noirlac<\/span>, there is a tiny (but amazing) cafe-restaurant. \u00a0It doesn&#8217;t look like much, but the lunch was so delicious that we actually came back\u00a0for dinner\u00a0later on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Hong Kong: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where to Eat:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Nan Tei<\/span> (55 Staunton Street) &#8211; this is my favourite\u00a0restaurant in Hong Kong. \u00a0If we have family and friends and we want to take them to a place that is consistently excellent but without the unnecessary grandeur and pomp, we would take them to this wonderful and cozy Japanese grill house. \u00a0It&#8217;s not fancy. \u00a0It&#8217;s not posh. \u00a0But the food is amazing. \u00a0Must-order dishes include: \u00a0lamb cutlets; salmon wrapped in bacon; asparagus wrapped in bacon; chicken wings stuffed with cheese (my favourite !!!!!).<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Yardbird<\/span> &#8211; chicken and chicken and chicken. \u00a0But ohhhhh so yummmmmy. \u00a0I am very fond of the &#8220;chicken oyster&#8221;. \u00a0And for vegetarians, I would recommend the &#8220;KFC&#8221; (which stands for Korean Fried Cauliflowers) and the mushroom risotto &#8212; both are winners.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Alfie&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a0 &#8211; we predominantly frequent Alfie&#8217;s for cocktails. \u00a0Occasionally, we will eat there. \u00a0On the whole, the food is great (but a little pricey) and I would happily recommend this establishment. \u00a0However, I do have one objection and this is relates to the portion size of their steak and kidney pies. \u00a0The sizes are the same for a starter portion and for a main course portion. \u00a0Given that the main course is more expensive than the starter, I find this disagreeable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Indonesia:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hotels<\/strong>: \u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Amandari<\/span>\u00a0(Ubud),\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Amanjiwo<\/span>\u00a0(Borobudur) and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Amanusa<\/span>\u00a0(Bali)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PROs: \u00a0heavenly. \u00a0This is The Aman at it&#8217;s best. \u00a0And, where better to enjoy The Aman than in Bali? \u00a0 Btw:\u00a0\u00a0the passionfruit souffl\u00e9 at the Amanjiwo is NOT to be missed!<\/li>\n<li>CONs: \u00a0expensive!\u00a0 Also, if you do the &#8220;Bali &amp; Beyond&#8221; package, I would recommend\u00a0that you add\u00a0extra days around the Amanjiwo visit to allow for travel and transit time. \u00a0(We extended our Bali &amp; Beyond package to 11 nights: \u00a05 nights at Amandari, 4 nights at Amanjiwo and 2 nights at Amanusa. \u00a0This was a wise decision because the transit to\/from the Amanjiwo resort took almost a full day each way.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Kyrgyzstan:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hotel:<\/strong> \u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Asia Mountains Guesthouse<\/span>, Lineinaja 1A, City Center, Bishkek. \u00a0Tel: +996 312 69 02 35<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PROs: clean, friendly staff, nice garden, good breakfast. \u00a0We would use this hotel again.<\/li>\n<li>CONs: \u00a0near a rail line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Restaurant<\/strong>: <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Old Edgar<\/span> (hard to find as the entrance is almost hidden, located to the west side of the Russian Drama Theatre) in Bishkek. \u00a0This is a moderately priced restaurant featuring Central Asian and Russian food and is a good escape if you are tired of hotel food. \u00a0Good selection of food. \u00a0Friendly service. \u00a0I particularly enjoyed the beetroot and herring salad. \u00a0Yummmmmmy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Market<\/strong>: \u00a0this is actually a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>WARNING<\/em><\/span> \u00a0. . . \u00a0be careful at <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Osh Market in Bishkek<\/strong><\/span> as there are corrupt police officers working the market and targeting tourists. \u00a0(Pls see the <a href=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/?p=447\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Silk Road travel blog<\/a> for more information.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Mongolia:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Restaurant<\/strong>: \u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Silk Road Bar &amp; Grill<\/span>\u00a0(Jamiyan Guunii Gudamj, Ulaanbaatar) &#8212; oh thank you Lonely Planet for the recommendation! \u00a0We almost didn&#8217;t try this place as it sounded &#8220;touristy&#8221;. \u00a0But, as we passed by we noticed that lots of locals were eating there. \u00a0And, we were tired and hungry and decided to &#8216;have a go&#8217; . . . \u00a0wise decision as the grilled lamb was soooooo lovely. \u00a0(We even tried to reverse engineer the marinade once we got home!)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Scotland:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where to Eat:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Chez Fleming\u00a0<\/span>(Laggan) &#8211; Private kitchen. \u00a0Reservations are nearly impossible &#8212; unless you know the owners. \u00a0I&#8217;ve never had a meal that I didn&#8217;t like and I always look forward to my next time there.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">The Cross at Kingussie\u00a0<\/span>(Tweed Mill Brae, Ardbroilach Road) &#8212; if you can&#8217;t get in to Chez Fleming, then this is the next best thing. \u00a0But, don&#8217;t be disappointed about Chez Fleming because the food here is very accomplished and the service is\u00a0impeccable. \u00a0 In fact, I would say that the quality and execution at The Cross is better than some of the &#8220;top restaurants&#8221; in London. \u00a0Every dish we had was beautifully executed and wonderfully flavoured. \u00a0And it was also very reasonably priced. \u00a0We ordered from the fixed menu (at GBP 55\/person) and were wonderfully surprised by how much we got. \u00a0The <em>amuse bouches<\/em>\u00a0were delightful and the freshly baked bread was sensational. \u00a0Friends recommended this establishment to us and we are so very grateful because The Cross is\u00a0now \u00a0on our must-visit list every time we&#8217;re in Scotland.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">The Potting Shed\u00a0<\/span>(Inshriach Nursery, Aviemore) &#8212; for cakes and coffee\/tea. \u00a0A gem of a place to stop off and have home baked cakes. \u00a0I particularly love their setup &#8212; if you are lucky and can snag a seat along the\u00a0viewing platform, then you will have a glorious view of the plethora of birds (and squirrels) going bonkers over the multiple bird feeders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Spain:<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where to Eat in <span style=\"color: #00ffff;\">Barcelona<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Elysa Y Fred<\/span>\u00a0(Carrer del Rec Comtal 11) &#8211; we were tired and hungry and could not find a nice &#8216;non-touristy&#8217; place to eat. \u00a0So, when we stumbled upon this modern and well presented restaurant, we were so happy to get a seat at the bar for a drink and light tapas. \u00a0The grilled squid was exceptional. \u00a0In fact, it was so good that we did a repeat visit later that week and enjoyed it the second time around. We normally don&#8217;t like repeating places, but, for our last meal in Barca, we had\u00a0dinner and we were not disappointed. \u00a0The salted cod checks with black rice was a wonderful (new) food sensation.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Carmelitas<\/span>\u00a0(Calle Carme 42) &#8211; very modern establishment that would not look out of place in Manhattan. \u00a0But it is also a very local Barca establishment &#8212; as demonstrated by the clear absence of tourists. \u00a0The standout dishes were: the\u00a0burrata salad; smokey grilled beetroot salad with spicy yogurt; and veal with &#8216;cuttlefish noodles&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Le Bouchon<\/span>\u00a0(Mercer Hotel, Calle dels Lledo 7) &#8211; we did not know that this establishment was connected with the hotel until we were seated. \u00a0But once at our table, our regrets quickly evaporated. \u00a0Very good tapas and service. \u00a0The most memorable dish was &#8216;baby sardines on filo pastry with caramelised onions and whipped cream&#8217; \u2026.. \u00a0it was a stunner of a dish!<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Bodega La Punctual<\/span> (Carrer Montcada 22) &#8211; after visiting the Picasso Museum, Bruce and I were ready for lunch but we were weary about eating so close to the museum (i.e. tourist traps!). \u00a0As we were leaving the area, Bruce noted that this establishment was full of &#8216;older Spanish men drinking wine&#8217; and he concluded that there is a high probability of this being a decent place to eat given that it was frequented by the locals. \u00a0 He was wrong &#8212; it was not a decent place; it was a great place. \u00a0Of all the fabulous dishes we had, I particularly enjoyed the grilled octopus.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Caelum<\/span>\u00a0(Calle de la Palla)- a special mention is warranted about this establishment. the food is simply outstanding. \u00a0In fact, it was so good that we became repeat offenders and eat at this wonderful establishments multiple times during our 5 days trip to Madrid. \u00a0Reservations required &#8212; and is difficult to get. \u00a0HOWEVER, if you arrive when the restaurant opens (8PM) then you stand a very good chance of nabbing a table at the front of the restaurant. \u00a0(This is how we managed to get in on multiple occasions.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Where to Eat in <span style=\"color: #00ffff;\">Sevilla<\/span>:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">El Rinconcillo<\/span>\u00a0(Calle Gerona 40) &#8211; as mentioned in my blog, we&#8217;d accidentally stumbled upon this place and loved it so much that we made it our local tavern during our week in Sevilla. \u00a0We did not eat at the restaurant, but instead had tapas and wine at the bar. \u00a0On our last night, we treated ourselves to the homemade flan and it was the best flan I&#8217;ve ever had.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Restaurante Contenedor<\/span>\u00a0(San Luis 50) &#8211; the restaurant is famous for slow cooking and for serving local produce. \u00a0As such, it is very popular and reservations are absolutely necessary. \u00a0While we were there, we saw the hostess\/manager turn away multiple\u00a0walk-in customers who were attracted to the lively and charming buzz that this restaurant oozes. \u00a0Warning: \u00a0the dessert portions are huge!<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">La Mata 24<\/span>\u00a0(Calle\u00a0<span class=\"street-address\">Mata 24,<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"extended-address\">Alameda de Hercules) &#8211; a good alternative to Restaurante Contenedor (if you can&#8217;t get booking) but be advised that this one gets busy as well. \u00a0We did a walk-in at 8PM and to our happy surprise, we got a table but within 30 minutes the place was packed with locals. \u00a0Fresh and modern dishes. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Where to Eat in\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ffff;\">Granada<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Los Diamantes<\/span> (Plaza Nueva &#8211; across from the taxi ranks) &#8212; let&#8217;s be honest here. \u00a0This establishment reeks of &#8220;tourist trap&#8221; as it is bang-center in the most touristy plaza in Granada. \u00a0But yet upcoming closer inspection, it is almost always full of locals. \u00a0The reason for this is that Los Diamantes is a rare gem: \u00a0very very good tapas, good service and all at an affordable price. \u00a0Highly recommend &#8212; and don&#8217;t let the crowds deter you. \u00a0(Alternatively, go at a &#8220;quiet time&#8221; which is generally at 5PM.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Where to Eat in <span style=\"color: #00ffff;\">Cordoba<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Mercado de la Corredera, Puesto (Stall) 21<\/span>\u00a0(Plaza Corredera) &#8211; the trick to finding this place is to ignore the\u00a0outdoor seating plaza and head inside the markets. \u00a0Once indoor, find Stall 21 which is located in the furtherest righthand corner. \u00a0Then grab a seat or a stand if you see something available (because this place gets really busy &#8212; especially during the weekend and during a bank holiday) and then send your partner to the adjacent markets to buy fresh produce which the chef at this stall will cook for you. \u00a0The principle is simple: \u00a0you source the food you want to eat and you tell the chef how you want it cooked (fried, grilled, steamed, boiled or baked) and he&#8217;ll produce a simple but wonderful dish for you (EUR 3 for a large plate). \u00a0And this stall sells wine and beer as well. \u00a0Perfecto!!!<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Amarre<\/span>\u00a0(Calle Ronda de Isasa 10) &#8211; located near the Mezquita and along the river, this establishment was the perfect place to place our feet up and have a cold beer. \u00a0Whilst there, we saw the staff bring out beautiful plates of food so we decided to have a bite as well; we were pleasantly surprised by the quality and freshness of the food. The standout dish was the tuna tartar on a bed of avocados accompanied by a wonderful balsamic vinegar.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">fusion by sojo<\/span> (Paseo de la Ribera) &#8211; a great place for breakfast. \u00a0Great location.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Taberna Los Berengueles<\/span> (de Torres Cabrera 7) &#8211; as we passed by this restaurants several nights prior, it was full of locals which piqued our interest. \u00a0One night we found ourselves back in this area and although we had no reservations, we decided to try our luck getting in. \u00a0We were indeed lucky as we managed to secure a table in the lovely courtyard. \u00a0Very soon thereafter the dinner crowd arrived and the place was buzzing. \u00a0The atmosphere was wonderful and relaxed (I loved the orange blossom scents wafting around the courtyard) and the food was good (the starters were exceptional &#8212; in particular, the pate platter and the white asparagus salad; the main course, however, was somewhat pedestrian). \u00a0Although this restaurant has room for improvements, I cannot fault this place for its honest approach to food and for the friendliness of the staff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Sri Lanka: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hotel<\/strong>: \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">The Wallawwa<\/span> (www.thewallawwa.com), Colombo<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PROs: a luxurious haven (could be mistaken as a &#8220;W Hotel&#8221;) and a great launch pad to\/from the airport;
