{"id":6240,"date":"2011-06-28T18:21:42","date_gmt":"2011-06-28T10:21:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/?p=6240"},"modified":"2013-08-07T09:42:10","modified_gmt":"2013-08-07T01:42:10","slug":"travel-blog-indonesia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/?p=6240","title":{"rendered":"Travel Blog &#8211; Indonesia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6199 alignnone\" alt=\"Indonesia\" src=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TLE5414v2.jpg\" width=\"338\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TLE5414v2.jpg 527w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TLE5414v2-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My sister&#8217;s work colleague (Toro) has a saying about Japanese temples:\u00a0 if there are no school kids around, then it&#8217;s not a real temple. \u00a0Well, what is true in Japan is also true in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Kids: \u00a0We are working on a school project and have a few questions for you. \u00a0<em>May we have \u00a0few minutes of your time? \u00a0<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Bruce: \u00a0Of course.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Kids: Where are you from? &#8230; \u00a0How long are you staying in Indonesia? \u00a0Do you like Indonesia? <\/em><em>Do you like the food? \u00a0What do you think of the people? \u00a0How is our English? \u00a0And, can we take a picture with you?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re Asian like I am, then the above only happened several times. \u00a0However, if you are tall, blonde and have blue eyes (like Bruce) then imagine the above multipled by 50. \u00a0Welcome to the world of &#8216;tourist hunters&#8217;. \u00a0Thankfully, instead of pickpockets and thieves, the hunters were the flocks of school kids on assignment to practice their English with foreigners. \u00a0And, _everyone_ wanted to practice their English with Bruce!\u00a0 And given that we were such an &#8216;odd couple&#8217;, we really stood out amongst the crowd and immediately drew the attention of the school kids like bears to honey.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-6312\" alt=\"_TLE5148\" src=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TLE5148-300x199.jpg\" width=\"270\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TLE5148-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TLE5148.jpg 865w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was interesting to watch the school kids operate around the temple grounds. \u00a0They mostly traveled in packs and the most audacious in the group would shout out &#8216;hello&#8217;. \u00a0If you hello back, then you&#8217;re automatically hooked. \u00a0And, usually only one or two in the group would do the talking (which defeated the purpose of getting <em>all<\/em> the kids to practice their English). \u00a0So, my strategy was to ask each kid for their name and age and once the rapport was established, the conversation became more dynamic. \u00a0As enjoyable as it was to interact with the school kids, we started to attract a crowd. \u00a0So, it soon became a never-ending queue of school kids wanting to practice English with us. \u00a0 Hence, we spent more time being interviewed then actually visiting the temples!\u00a0 In the end, we spotted another group of Westerns and started to tail them.\u00a0 This served to load-balance the interview queue and ultimately, we managed to engineer a few brief moments to ourselves while on the temple grounds.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6311\" style=\"width: 280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6311\" class=\" wp-image-6311\" alt=\"IMG_2152\" src=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_2152-300x300.jpg\" width=\"270\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_2152-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_2152-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_2152.jpg 648w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prambanan temple complex<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And temples we did visit! \u00a0 Temples to culture. \u00a0Temples to religion. \u00a0And temples to the beaches. \u00a0We&#8217;d organised our holiday into three phases: first, five days in Ubud to absorb the Balinese culture; then, four days in central Java to visit Borobudur &#8212; the largest Buddhist temple in the world; and finally, two days in Bali to soak up the beach.\u00a0 Because each phase was so different from each other, we felt that we had three distinctive vacations back-to-back.\u00a0 It was such a wonderful way to explore and enjoy Indonesia!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Ubud:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to the locals, Ubud during peak season is insane with the tiny town inundated with tourists.\u00a0 Fortunately, we arrived just a few weeks shy from the start of the peak season so we had the best temperature but without the traffic madness.\u00a0 And, it meant that we had no difficulties getting dinner reservations at the recommended restaurants.\u00a0 There were two Balinese dishes that we were absolutely determined to try &#8212; <em>bebek betutu<\/em> (slow roasted, leaf-wrapped duck) at The Dirty Duck and <em>babi guling<\/em> (suckling pig on a spit) at Ibu Oka.\u00a0 The former required 24-hours advance notice because the duck is slow-cooked.\u00a0 The latter does not, but, it required getting to the restaurant early because the babi guling often sell out quickly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-6287\" alt=\"copyright_1727\" src=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_1727-225x300.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_1727-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_1727.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/>\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-6286\" alt=\"copyright_1731\" src=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_1731-225x300.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_1731-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_1731.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As tourists, we were spoiled for choice in terms of evening performance &#8212; every night around the Ubud palace, there were traditional Balinese dances at various venues. \u00a0The performances in front of the &#8216;lotus pond temple&#8217; was one of the better ones. \u00a0At night, the area was lit up with candles and the temple served as the backdrop. In the vicinity were restaurants with views of the stage and thus it was possible (usually with advance reservation) to have dinner whilst watching the performances. (No surprises &#8212; the food was distinctively mediocre as the restaurants relied solely on passing tourist trade.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6231 alignnone\" alt=\"Ubud, Indonesia\" src=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TLE1477v3.jpg\" width=\"554\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TLE1477v3.jpg 865w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/TLE1477v3-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 554px) 100vw, 554px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But the most memorable performance we found was actually well off the tourist path. \u00a0We came upon <em>Kecak<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; the Monkey Chant Dance &#8212; quite\u00a0by chance as it was not on the hotel&#8217;s radar of cultural things to do\/see. \u00a0Instead, we found this performance as a result of checking the local papers. (Travel tip: \u00a0always read the local papers and ask the locals. \u00a0Don&#8217;t depend solely on the hotel staff.) \u00a0We had no idea what to expect as we went to the performance on a hunch. And, it was well worth the effort &#8212; it was stunning, captivating and engaging.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6099  \" alt=\"Ubud, Indonesia\" src=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/TLM7571.jpg\" width=\"555\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/TLM7571.jpg 867w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/TLM7571-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 555px) 100vw, 555px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kecak is based on the Hindu epic Ramayana and is told as a dance. It is not accompanied by any musical instruments. Instead, a chorus of approximately seventy men imitate the sounds of musical instruments, tell the story, and provide sound effects.<\/p>\n<p>Another fond memory from Ubud was the fantastic Bird and Reptile Park. \u00a0We typically don&#8217;t visit zoos when we travel, but, we had a spare afternoon. Perhaps we enjoyed it because we had low(ish) expectations. \u00a0Regardless, the park was well designed (with a walk-thru aviary) and it had wide variety of healthy birds (plus one Komodo dragon). \u00a0One in particular caught me attention and it was very patient with me as I&#8217;d clicked-clicked-clicked away with my Nikon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/TLE4565.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox[sbpost-6240];player=img;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6073\" alt=\"Indonesia\" src=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/TLE4565-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/TLE4565-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/TLE4565.jpg 865w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although Ubud is famous for it&#8217;s art galleries, we avoided hitting the galleries and shops as we were more interested in going off-the-beaten track.\u00a0 As such, we hired a car and driver and drove around the vicinity checking out the local temples. \u00a0En route to a temple, we saw a group of women harvesting rice and we immediately pulled over. \u00a0They were so amused and perplexed that we wanted to photograph them working. \u00a0In fact, the ladies giggled solidly throughout the entire impromptu photo session.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6306\" alt=\"_TLE3368\" src=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TLE3368-199x300.jpg\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TLE3368-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TLE3368.jpg 502w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6304\" alt=\"_TLE3227\" src=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TLE3227-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TLE3227-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/le-mckernan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TLE3227.jpg 865w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Borobudur:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On paper, getting to Borobudur from Bali is a simple one-hour flight away. \u00a0In reality, it took almost a full day in transit (mostly due to the crazy road traffic). \u00a0Thankfully, we allowed ourselves extra time and thus didn&#8217;t stress out when we crawled along the main road connecting Yogyakarta to Borobudur. \u00a0It was particularly entertaining to see the local Javanese turn a two-lane street into a four-lane road.\u00a0 At one point, an ambulance with sirens on came blazing by and made space thru the traffic jam.\u00a0 And although we were not surprised to see a few cars &#8216;cheat&#8217; and follow the ambulance, we were not expecting to see an entire (new) lane follow the ambulance.\u00a0 In the end, the new &#8216;ambulance chase&#8217; lane stretched for about 1\/2 mile long until the traffic on the opposite lane finally forced the ambulance chasers back onto their own lane.\u00a0 Our driver was completely non-plussed as this was everyday normal for him!<\/p>\n<p>Although Borobudur is mana for temple fans and could rival the likes of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Borobudur has less development.\u00a0 As far as we could see, the amenities in the area was very limited and thus we had to rely on our hotel for all meals and for travel logistics.\u00a0 Luckily, our hotel looked after us exceptionally well and we managed to explore Borobudur several times &#8212;
